The term navel orange generically indicates a variety of orange that has a twin fruit inside the peel, undeveloped and located at the apical pole, opposite to the petiole. The varieties of Citrus sinensis that contain a twin fruit are Brazilian, Washington Navel, Navelina, Thompson, Navelate, Golden Buckeye, Cara Cara, Fukumoto, Riverside.
The first variety of navel orange was developed at a monastery in Brazil (state of Pernambuco) in 1820 from a single mutation. This mutation gives life to a second orange, which grows like a twin but in a much smaller space. From the outside, in correspondence with the second fruit, the peel has a hollow that resembles the navel.
