Calabrian clementines are an Italian fruit and vegetable product with Protected Geographical Indication characteristic of the Calabria Region, it exclusively designates the fruit belonging to the following crops, clonal selections, bud mutations: “SRA 63”, “Spinoso”, “Fedele”, “Comune”, “Late”, “Hernandina”, “Marisol” and “di Nules”.
The fruit is harvested from November to January, when the hesperides reach the right ripeness and a good sugar content which can be determined by the color of the peel, which turns from green to an intense orange color. Harvesting is done manually with the use of teams of local agricultural laborers or from neighboring regions. The fruit is delivered in 10 kg crates or in larger containers and then sorted to packaging centers. The packaging concerns the product destined for sale in other Italian regions or abroad, while locally the sale takes place in bulk at local shops and street traders.
